The problem

The Nature India Nursery website had become outdated, with a traditional look that didn’t align with modern aesthetics. The pages featured bright colors that were visually overwhelming, making it difficult for users to navigate smoothly. Unlike typical e-commerce sites, Nature India Nursery operates on a bulk purchase model where customers add items to a cart and send a quote request to the sales team, rather than making direct purchases. Therefore, the backend needed to be customized for this unique ordering process.

A major challenge was managing the extensive catalog of over 600 native Indian plants, each with scientific names only. This posed a significant issue for users unfamiliar with botanical terminology, making it hard for them to find the plants they wanted. Designing a solution to make the plant selection process easier was essential to improve the user experience.

The approach

To develop a user-friendly site, the team began by benchmarking similar nursery websites. Although there were few relevant domestic sites, the team analyzed several international examples, gaining valuable insights from their designs and structures. This research phase informed the creation of box diagrams and high-fidelity wireframes, which were iteratively refined based on client feedback until reaching the desired standard.

The design approach emphasized a minimalist color scheme and simple typography to create a clean, accessible interface. During the design process, the client added new requirements, including features like a real-time plant species counter and a Product of the Day section that would highlight a unique plant daily. These new elements required adjustments to the approved designs to accommodate the additional features without compromising usability.

Robust backend

The development phase was particularly challenging due to the large volume of products, each with extensive details that needed to be displayed accurately. Additionally, the team developed a backend solution to handle quote requests, storing them securely for efficient management by the sales team. The client also requested that all plant images be watermarked to prevent unauthorized use, adding an extra layer of complexity to the image management process.

To further protect the images, the client wanted copy protection measures to prevent downloading, ensuring the proprietary visuals couldn’t be misused. The site also needed sections highlighting the nursery’s specialized services, such as Miyawaki Plantation and Conservation Landscaping, and a display of various customer types who could request quotes, such as landscapers, garden designers, and municipalities.

Ready for take-off

After completing development, the team conducted user testing to gather feedback from target users. This testing phase provided valuable insights, leading to minor adjustments to improve usability and enhance the overall experience. Once the feedback was incorporated, the website was launched, followed by performance optimization to ensure fast loading times and smooth navigation.

The result was a user-centered, feature-rich website that meets the specific needs of Nature India Nursery’s unique business model, making it easier for customers to explore, select, and request quotes for native Indian plants.
